From December 2-9 Land Rights Now and organizations worldwide are coming together to raise awareness of how securing land rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities is key to protecting biodiversity and preventing pandemics.
Did you know?
- That up to 2.5 billion people, including 370 million Indigenous People, depend on land and natural resources that are held, used or managed collectively.
- That they protect more than 50%of world’s land surface, but have formally recognized ownership over just 10%*
- That this leaves 1/3 of the world’s population vulnerable to dispossession by more powerful actors?
The goal is to secure these rights everywhere and to double the global area of land legally recognized as owned by Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
